Columbia, MD, March 25, 2013 – MedStar Family Choice, the Medicaid managed care organization (MCO) of MedStar Health, is the top-rated Medicaid HMO in Maryland and is ranked 17th in the nation by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA).
The state of Maryland recently released a performance report card for consumers rating the plans that participate in HealthChoice, the Medicaid managed care program of the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. MedStar Family Choice, with 31,000 enrolled members in Maryland, received the highest number of three-star ratings of the seven plans that make up HealthChoice.
The MedStar MCO performed "above HealthChoice average" (three stars) in four of the six performance areas: access to care, keeping kids healthy, taking care of women and diabetes care. It was rated "HealthChoice average" (two stars) in the other two areas: doctor communication and service, and care for kids with chronic illness.
"Our team puts patients first," said Eric R. Wagner, MedStar executive vice president for external affairs and diversified operations. "These performance measures are rigorous, and to be above average indicates a statistically significant achievement," he said.
NCQA, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to improving health care quality, ranked MedStar Family Choice 17th out of 115 Medicaid plans ranked in its 2012-2013 national report. Rankings are based on clinical performance, member satisfaction and NCQA Accreditation. This makes it the highest ranked Medicaid plan in Maryland, the District of Columbia and Virginia.
MedStar Family Choice has providers throughout Maryland and the Washington, D.C., region. With access to primary care and specialty physicians at multiple office locations and MedStar's 10 hospitals, "We have all you need to keep your family healthy, close to home," Wagner said.
